It seems like anytime you drive on Florida’s highways you are surrounded by drivers who just do not know what they are doing or are even driving recklessly. This is frustrating but frustration can turn to disaster when reckless or inattentive driving leads to a car crash. It may come as no surprise then that according to one report, Florida is home to some of the most dangerous roads in the United States.

Most dangerous highway: I-95

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 2020 saw the highest rate of fatal motor vehicle accidents since 2007. Some of these accidents took place on Florida roads. For example, Interstate 95 runs straight through Florida. I-95 has been deemed the most dangerous highway in the nation in 2019, especially in winter. Moreover, Hillsborough County in Florida saw the greatest amount of traffic fatalities in the U.S. at 15 fatalities per 100,000 individuals.

Interstate 75, which also runs through Florida also made the list of top 10 most dangerous roads in 2019. Fort Myers, Sarasota and Tampa were particularly dangerous areas to be driving on I-75. In 2019, I-75 saw 237 fatalities. U.S. 41 also made the list of top 10 most dangerous roads in the U.S. with 141 fatalities in 2019.

What can you do if you are struck by a car?

You can be the safest, most defensive, driver and still be involved in a motor vehicle accident that is simply not your fault. All drivers in Florida are tasked with the duty to drive reasonably under the circumstances. If a driver breaches this duty and strikes you, causing you to suffer damages that but for the crash would not have occurred, you may want to learn more about pursuing a lawsuit based on negligence. A successful lawsuit can provide you with the financial resources you need to make ends meet during a difficult time.
